BKPC recognizes the need to protect its surrounding environment and in minimizing its environmental footprint to the extent possible. The project was constructed following stringent Environmental requirements imposed by the Government of Nepal and the Lenders, which was used to formulate an Environment Management Plan (EMP). The implementation of the EMP was monitored by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Similarly, during rehabilitation of the project after the disasters, additional Environmental Management Plan had been prepared in coordination with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC) under the Ministry of Forests and Environment, and Gauri Shankar Conservation Area Project (GCAP). The implementation was monitored by DNPWC and signed off after completion of reconstruction activities.
BKPC has implemented various environment friendly features in the project such as preventing release of industrial waste / oil into the river by usage of oil skimmers in the powerhouse, proper management of waste, installation of environment friendly GSU Transformers, maintaining environmental flow in the river, fish release in the river, etc.
BKPC also supports the local community in various environment related programs such as tree planting, training on sustainable agriculture, etc.
